The Fashion Network (TFN), The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Registered Student Organization mission statement reads as follows: ‘To connect and facilitate collaboration between individuals and groups interested in fashion at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’ through Styling, Modeling, Photography, Videography, Marketing, Advertising, Writing, and Graphic Design outlets. Four photoshoots and various events take place each semester within the organization. A fashion magazine documenting these photoshoots is designed throughout the course of the semester, and wrapped up towards the end of the season - this is Olivia Sims’ responsibility, communicating the organization’s creative work experienced through photoshoots with visuals and writing content, neatly structured in a publication.

As the Creative Director of Design at The Fashion Network (TFN), Sims was responsible for overseeing the aesthetic cohesion of all visual elements produced by the organization. This encompassed the development of photoshoot concepts, creation of mood boards, curation of model outfits, publication design, social media grids, and the design of sets and props. Sims worked closely with the Creative Team to conceptualize and execute the visual direction of TFN’s projects, ensuring that every piece of content aligned with the organization’s brand identity. Managing these responsibilities while also being a full-time student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Sims demonstrated exceptional time management and leadership, balancing the demands of both roles with efficiency.

In the Spring 2023 season, Sims played a pivotal role in the design and production of The Fashion Network Magazine, TFN’s semesterly publication. This included directing the creation of original design templates, managing a team of graphic designers, and providing one-on-one guidance to ensure high-quality output. Sims was responsible for overseeing the entire magazine process—from coordinating photo shoots and gathering content, to finalizing design elements and crediting contributors. The result was a cohesive and visually compelling publication that encapsulated the essence of the Fall 2023 semester. Additionally, Sims was tasked with managing the overall visual and brand identity of TFN, ensuring that all media produced across various platforms maintained a consistent and polished aesthetic.

Sims also played a key role in TFN’s major events, such as the Circular Fashion Expo (CFE), where they led the creative direction, defined the event’s theme, and collaborated with the Creative Team to ensure the design reflected the desired visual narrative. Their involvement extended beyond design, as they also assisted with model styling and directed photoshoots to ensure the final images captured the intended aesthetic. In addition to event and publication work, Sims contributed to the management of TFN’s social media presence, designing and posting content for Instagram feeds, stories, and reels to engage the audience and promote TFN’s initiatives. By coordinating design resources and assigning tasks to other designers, Sims ensured the design process ran smoothly, filling any gaps and maintaining a high standard of work throughout the semester. Ultimately, Sims’ leadership in the creative process helped elevate TFN’s visual identity and maintain a cohesive, professional image across all channels.

Olivia Sims led the selection and oversight of graphic designers for Issue 12 of The Fashion Network Magazine (FA23 season). Each designer was assigned to one of the four photoshoots conducted during the FA23 season, with the task of creating a 40-page magazine spread that visually communicated the theme of their respective photoshoot. The designers used images from the photoshoots, writing pieces from the TFN Writing Team, and their own creative interpretation of the theme to craft their spreads. To facilitate collaboration and ensure timely feedback, designers initially created their drafts outside of Figma before transferring their work onto the platform for critique, enabling a streamlined review process.

To guide the designers through the process, Sims created a spread template and established strict deadlines for rough draft submissions. This structure allowed Sims to provide extensive, professional critiques aimed at refining the designers' work and fostering creative exploration. The feedback was designed to challenge and inspire each designer by asking thought-provoking, in-depth questions that would push their design vision forward and enhance the overall quality of the publication.

In addition to guiding and mentoring the design team, Sims also played a hands-on role in the magazine's production. She personally designed and organized several key spreads, including the Circular Fashion Exposition spread, the Alumni Spotlight feature, crediting index pages, executive board introduction pages, and the magazine cover. Sims was responsible for coordinating all spreads and pages, ensuring that each piece contributed to a cohesive and polished final product. This collaborative effort culminated in the completion of the magazine, which is scheduled for launch in Spring 2024.
